BS IEC 61511 PDF

It is generic and sometimes even vague. IEC was intended that various industry sectors provide their own specific standards and guidelines as needed. Here we can see the relationship between and other standards, such as for the nuclear sector, for the machine safety sector, and for the process control sector. IEC Standard deals with the entire safety lifecycle of safety systems, from cradle to grave. It targets suppliers of safety systems, but is also applicable to some degree to suppliers of equipment used in those safety systems.

Because the number of applications is so varied, such that many different applications could use the same equipment in different ways, only some parts of the Realization phase are applicable to equipment manufacturers.

Certification is optional; does not require this. But Assessment against requirements of is not. IEC Standard is user focused, but it does not assign responsibilities; that is a common issue that must be done for any given project.

Metrics are calculated to prove this out. There is a focus on the end user application… what the SIF is trying to achieve.

Scope[ edit ] The process industry sector includes many types of manufacturing processes, such as refineries, petrochemical, chemical, pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, and power. The process sector standard does not cover nuclear power facilities or nuclear reactors. IEC covers the application of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic equipment. While IEC does apply to equipment using pneumatic or hydraulic systems to manipulate final elements, the standard does not cover the design and implementation of pneumatic or hydraulic logic solvers. This standard defines the functional safety requirements established by IEC in process industry sector terminology. This document sets the standards for safety-related system design of hardware and software. IEC is generic functional safety standard, providing the framework and core requirements for sector specific standard.
